Abstract

Aviation safety depends on communication between pilots and Air Traffic Controllers (ATC), particularly when information must be conveyed and understood rapidly, accurately, and without ambiguity. Language barriers involving pronunciation, accents, speaking rate, technical terminology, and phraseology may affect instruction comprehension and the accuracy of trainees’ responses, while quantitative studies on this issue in Indonesian aviation education remain limited. This study analyzes the effect of language barriers on communication effectiveness among pilot trainees and ATC at the Indonesian Aviation Academy Banyuwangi. The study employed an associative quantitative approach involving 85 trainees, with data collected through questionnaires, observations, and documentation. Analysis included validity, reliability, normality, linearity, simple linear regression, t-test, and coefficient of determination tests. Results showed a significant effect, with a regression coefficient of 0.634, Beta of 0.671, t value of 7.287, significance of 0.000, and R² of 0.450. Findings emphasize strengthening Aviation English through communication training and flight simulations.
