Abstract

The Holy Communion is a practice rooted in God’s work of salvation; however, its meaning is often reduced to the symbols of bread and wine and the remembrance of Christ’s death. This condition highlights the importance of examining the Old Testament as a theological foundation for developing a more comprehensive understanding of the Holy Communion. This study aims to analyze the influence of the Old Testament sacrificial theology on the meaning of the Holy Communion, particularly in relation to atonement, covenant blood, Passover, thanksgiving, and the fellowship of believers. The study employs a qualitative method through library research using a descriptive-interpretive approach to Old Testament and New Testament texts, as well as relevant theological literature. The findings indicate that sacrificial theology provides a framework integrating atonement, covenant, thanksgiving, and fellowship. The Passover sacrifice and covenant blood find their fulfillment in Christ’s sacrifice. The Holy Communion is not a repetition of the sacrifice, but a celebration of faith in Christ’s perfect redemptive work. The novelty of this study lies in its integrative framework, which views these four dimensions as a unified whole, thereby understanding the Holy Communion as a celebration of salvation that shapes the identity, thanksgiving, and fellowship of the church.
